A common dilemma for many Nigerian high school students in their final year is deciding on a befitting course to study in the university. Sometimes, these students have multiple interests and worry about what would be best for their future.

How can we help them understand their strengths and curiosities?  What if there was a way for people to have a glimpse of these courses before fully committing to it? How can we answer burning career questions they might have?

I did some research around the problem; understanding the concept of personalised learning and how it works. I also conducted research to discover the issues students have with looking for a field of study.

Here are a few user pain points I discovered from my research:

• Students were worried about getting bored quickly with their course choice.
• They were also worried about what courses makes them more employable in the future (future-proofing).
• They don't know which courses guarantee money or success in the future.
• They also don't know what to do about having multiple interests.

Based off the user research, the app should be:

• Reliable - It should show accurate information
• Usable - It should be easy to use & It should help users accomplish their goals

To focus on accomplishing the goal, I introduced the following constraints:

• Users cannot skip the assessment after creating an account
• I reduced the scope to focus only on the best path (positive experience)

• The user is using the app for the first time
• The user has access to a phone and an internet service provider
• The A.I. & Machine Learning powered technology required to evaluate a user and suggest what courses they need to take based on the result of the test exists and can work well with the number of questions asked
• There are no errors. It is very important to think about other paths that are not the best paths.

Design Solution

The first step to getting a course recommendation is creating an account.

After creating their profile, students are prompted to take the assessment.

After the assessment, the students are shown a summary of their strengths and the courses the system thinks they’ll be great at.

What did I learn?

I learned a lot from this project but if there’s an opportunity to redo this, I’ll definitely pick a softer sans-serif and shade of blue.
I used blue as the primary colour for the app because according to colour psychology (for learning), blue is a calming colour used to induce productivity. I believe something softer might improve the overall visual design and user experience.
